How to calculate your numerology numbers by hand
Step-by-step methods for Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday, Attitude, Maturity and Personal Year, with the letter table.
You do not need a calculator to work out your numbers — just a pen, your birth date and your full birth name. Below are the exact methods Bavanga uses, with a worked example for a person named Nguyễn Văn Đức, born 26 January 1990.
Reducing numbers
Most indicators are "reduced" by adding the digits of a number together until a single digit remains: 28 → 2 + 8 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1. The exceptions are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which are kept as they are.
1. Life Path (Số chủ đạo)
Add every digit of the full birth date: 2 + 6 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28. Following the Vietnamese convention, keep reducing only while the result is greater than 11 (and not 22 or 33): 28 → 2 + 8 = 10. The Life Path is written 28/10. Life Paths therefore range from 2 to 11, plus 22 and 33.
2. Birthday number (Chỉ số ngày sinh)
Reduce the day of birth: 26 → 2 + 6 = 8. A person born on the 11th, 22nd or 29th (2 + 9 = 11) keeps a master number.
3. Attitude number (Chỉ số thái độ)
Add day and month, then reduce: 26 + 1 = 27 → 9.
The letter table
Remove diacritics first (Đ becomes D, Ư becomes U and so on), then use the Pythagorean table:
- 1: A, J, S
- 2: B, K, T
- 3: C, L, U
- 4: D, M, V
- 5: E, N, W
- 6: F, O, X
- 7: G, P, Y
- 8: H, Q, Z
- 9: I, R
4. Expression / Destiny (Chỉ số sứ mệnh)
Add the letter values of each part of the name separately, reduce each part, then add the parts and reduce again:
- NGUYEN = 5 + 7 + 3 + 7 + 5 + 5 = 32 → 5
- VAN = 4 + 1 + 5 = 10 → 1
- DUC = 4 + 3 + 3 = 10 → 1
Total 5 + 1 + 1 = 7. Working part by part protects master numbers that would otherwise disappear.
5. Soul Urge (Chỉ số linh hồn)
Use only the vowels A, E, I, O, U. The letter Y counts as a vowel only when it is not next to another vowel (as in "LY" or "MY"); in NGUYEN it sits between U and E, so it is a consonant. NGUYEN: U + E = 3 + 5 = 8; VAN: A = 1; DUC: U = 3. Total 8 + 1 + 3 = 12 → 3.
6. Personality (Chỉ số nhân cách)
Use only the consonants. NGUYEN: N + G + Y + N = 5 + 7 + 7 + 5 = 24 → 6; VAN: V + N = 9; DUC: D + C = 7. Total 6 + 9 + 7 = 22 — a master number, so it stays.
7. Maturity (Chỉ số trưởng thành)
Add Life Path and Expression: 10 + 7 = 17 → 8. This number is said to grow stronger from around age 35–40.
8. Balance and Rational Thought
- Balance: add the first letters of each name part: N + V + D = 5 + 4 + 4 = 13 → 4.
- Rational Thought: the reduced given name (the last word in Vietnamese order, here DUC = 1) plus the reduced birth day (8) = 9.
9. Personal Year (Năm cá nhân)
Reduce day, month and the current year separately, then add and reduce to 1–9. For 2026: day 26 → 8, month 1, year 2026 → 10 → 1; 8 + 1 + 1 = 10 → 1. So 2026 is a Personal Year 1 — a fresh start. Personal Month adds the calendar month number to the Personal Year; Personal Day adds the calendar day to the Personal Month.
10. Karmic debt
If any intermediate total along the way equals 13, 14, 16 or 19, that indicator carries a karmic debt. For example a Life Path that passes through 19 is written 19/10.
11. Karmic lessons
Count how many letters in the name produce each digit 1–9. Any digit that never appears is a karmic lesson. For Nguyễn Văn Đức the digits 2, 6, 8 and 9 are missing.
12. Birth chart
Place every non-zero digit of the birth date in the 3×3 grid (3 6 9 / 2 5 8 / 1 4 7). For 26/01/1990 the grid holds 1, 1, 2, 6, 9 and 9. Rows, columns and diagonals that are completely full or completely empty form arrows — see the article on the birth chart for their meanings.
Now that you know the method, you can check any result on this site by hand. Numbers become far more meaningful when you understand where they come from.
