Who was Baba Vanga? Our guide and inspiration

Baba Vanga (1911–1996), the blind Bulgarian mystic of Rupite, spent her life listening to the people who travelled from afar to see her. In her spirit of compassion, this site offers every reading freely to anyone who asks.

Baba Vanga is one of the most famous mystics of the twentieth century. Her name appears every year in headlines about "predictions" for the year ahead. But behind the viral stories was a real woman with a remarkable and often difficult life.

Early life

She was born Vangelia Pandeva Dimitrova on 3 October 1911 in Strumica, a town then in the Ottoman Empire and today in North Macedonia. Her childhood was marked by hardship: her mother died when she was young, and her family was poor.

As a child — around the age of twelve, according to most accounts — she was caught in a violent storm and thrown some distance by the wind. She was found with her eyes badly injured by dust and debris, and her family could not afford the treatment she needed. Over the following years she lost her sight completely. She later spent time at a school for the blind, where she learned skills such as knitting, cooking and playing the piano.

The seer of Petrich and Rupite

In the early 1940s Vangelia moved to Petrich, in south-western Bulgaria, and married Dimitar Gushterov. Word spread that she could offer insight to visitors — people searching for missing relatives during the war, families in distress, and later curious travellers from across Eastern Europe. People affectionately called her "Baba", meaning grandmother.

Over the decades, thousands of visitors came to see her. She often received them in Rupite, near Petrich, an area known for its hot mineral springs and extinct volcano. She is said to have spoken plainly and warmly, offering advice on health, family and personal choices. In 1994 she funded the building of a small church at Rupite, which still attracts visitors today.

Baba Vanga died on 11 August 1996. Her house in Petrich was later turned into a museum.

Facts and myths

Many "prophecies" now credited to Baba Vanga circulate online — about world events, natural disasters and even far-future centuries. The vast majority of these claims are unverified. She left no writings of her own; what we know comes from people who visited her, from journalists and from later books, and quotes are often misattributed, exaggerated or simply invented. Sensational headlines appear every year with new "predictions" that cannot be traced to any reliable source.

We think it is important to honour the real person rather than the myth: a blind woman who, despite poverty and loss, spent her life listening to strangers and offering them comfort.

Why Baba Vanga represents this site

Numerology was not Baba Vanga's practice — she was a folk seer and healer, not a numerologist. We chose her as the face of Bavanga because she symbolises the qualities we want this site to have:

  • Warmth: like a grandmother speaking to a grandchild, never cold or frightening.
  • Insight beyond sight: looking past surface appearances to the deeper patterns of a life.
  • Accessibility: she received anyone who came to her door; the core of every reading here is free for everyone.

The "Baba Vanga" voice you see in daily messages on this site is an affectionate, original tribute written by our team. These are not her words and not prophecies. Bavanga is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Baba Vanga's family, estate or the museum in Petrich.

Baba Vanga's own numbers

For fun, here are her numbers using her birth date, 3 October 1911:

  • Life Path: 3 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 1 = 16 → 7. Life Path 7 is the number of the seeker, the mystic and the inner eye — fitting for a woman known for seeing without sight. The compound 16 is also a karmic debt number, associated with the collapse of the old and spiritual awakening through hardship.
  • Birthday: 3 — expression and the gift of words.
  • Attitude: 3 + 10 = 13 → 4 — a practical, grounded approach to everyday life.
  • Birth chart: four 1s, one 3 and one 9. Repeated 1s are often linked with strong inner conviction; the many empty cells suggest a life that demanded great inner resources.

Whatever you believe about her gifts, her story invites us to listen more closely — to others and to ourselves. That is the spirit in which we offer every reading on this site.
