The 12 zodiac signs: birth dates, elements and how to find your sign
The date ranges of all twelve signs, the four elements and three modalities, why your Sun sign is only the start, and how astrology and numerology work together.
The twelve zodiac signs are the most familiar part of Western astrology. Most people know their sign from horoscope columns, yet fewer know where the signs come from, why they are grouped the way they are, or why two people with the same sign can be so different. This guide covers the essentials.
Where the signs come from
Seen from Earth, the Sun appears to travel through a band of sky over the course of a year. Ancient astronomers divided that band, the ecliptic, into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees and named each after a constellation. Western astrology ties the first section, Aries, to the spring equinox in March, so the signs follow the seasons rather than the present position of the constellations. Your "sign" is simply the section the Sun occupied on the day you were born.
Dates of the twelve signs
| Sign | Dates | Element | Modality | Ruling planet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 21/03 – 19/04 | Fire | Cardinal | Mars |
| Taurus | 20/04 – 20/05 | Earth | Fixed | Venus |
| Gemini | 21/05 – 20/06 | Air | Mutable | Mercury |
| Cancer | 21/06 – 22/07 | Water | Cardinal | Moon |
| Leo | 23/07 – 22/08 | Fire | Fixed | Sun |
| Virgo | 23/08 – 22/09 | Earth | Mutable | Mercury |
| Libra | 23/09 – 22/10 | Air | Cardinal | Venus |
| Scorpio | 23/10 – 21/11 | Water | Fixed | Pluto, Mars |
| Sagittarius | 22/11 – 21/12 | Fire | Mutable | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | 22/12 – 19/01 | Earth | Cardinal | Saturn |
| Aquarius | 20/01 – 18/02 | Air | Fixed | Uranus, Saturn |
| Pisces | 19/02 – 20/03 | Water | Mutable | Neptune, Jupiter |
The exact moment the Sun changes sign moves by up to a day from year to year. If you were born on a boundary date, a "cusp", the only way to be sure is to check the precise position for your year, time and place of birth.
The four elements
Each element groups three signs that share a basic temperament:
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): energy, courage, enthusiasm and a need to act.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practicality, patience, reliability and attention to results.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): ideas, communication, curiosity and social connection.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): emotion, intuition, empathy and depth.
Astrologers usually see signs of the same element as natural allies, and fire and air, or earth and water, as complementary pairs that feed each other.
The three modalities
The modality describes how a sign uses its element:
- Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) open each season. They like to start things and take the initiative.
- Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sit in the middle of a season. They are steady, loyal and hard to move.
- Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) close each season. They adapt, adjust and connect one phase to the next.
Combine element and modality and every sign becomes unique. Aries and Leo are both fire, but cardinal Aries sparks new ventures, while fixed Leo keeps the flame burning steadily.
Sun sign versus full birth chart
The sign you read about in a horoscope is your Sun sign. A full birth chart also places the Moon and every planet in a sign, and adds the Ascendant (rising sign), the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Astrologers link the Sun to your core identity, the Moon to your emotional needs and the Ascendant to the first impression you give. Because the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, a full chart needs your exact birth time and place. That is why two people born under the same Sun sign can feel so different: the rest of their charts may have little in common.
How to find your sign
To find your Sun sign, simply locate your birthday in the table above, using the solar calendar. To go further, look up your Moon sign and Ascendant with a chart calculator, entering the time on your birth certificate.
Zodiac and numerology together
Astrology and numerology are separate traditions, but they make good companions. The zodiac describes your temperament through the sky on the day you were born, while numerology reads the digits of the same date and the letters of your name. When both point the same way, for example a fiery Aries with a Life Path 1, the theme of leadership is worth taking seriously. When they differ, the contrast can be just as revealing: a cautious Capricorn with an adventurous Life Path 5 may spend a lifetime balancing security and freedom. Use both as mirrors for reflection, never as fixed rules.
