The birth chart and its arrows explained
How to draw the 3×3 Pythagorean grid, what the three planes mean, and how full and empty arrows describe your strengths and blind spots.
The birth chart is the most visual tool in Pythagorean numerology and a favourite among Vietnamese readers. It shows which energies you were born with in abundance and which you will need to develop.
Drawing the grid
Draw a square divided into nine cells. The digits are always placed in the same positions:
- top row: 3 6 9
- middle row: 2 5 8
- bottom row: 1 4 7
Write every digit of your birth date into its cell, ignoring zeros. Someone born on 26/01/1990 writes 2 and 6 for the day, 1 for the month and 1, 9, 9 for the year. The chart shows one 2, one 6, two 1s and two 9s; all other cells are empty.
The three planes
The rows describe three ways of engaging with life:
- Mental plane (3, 6, 9 — top row): thinking, imagination, memory and ideals.
- Emotional plane (2, 5, 8 — middle row): feelings, intuition, sensitivity and inner balance.
- Physical plane (1, 4, 7 — bottom row): action, practicality, the body and material skill.
The columns are also read as stages of a process: the left column (1, 2, 3) is about thought and planning, the middle (4, 5, 6) about will and expression, and the right (7, 8, 9) about action and experience.
Count how many digits sit on each plane. A chart heavy on the mental plane belongs to a thinker; a heavy physical plane belongs to a doer. Most people are strongest on one plane, and that tells you where they feel most at home.
Repeated and missing digits
Repetition intensifies a digit. One 1 gives a clear voice to self-expression; two 1s add balance and fluency; three or more can tip into either great talkativeness or a tendency to withdraw. Missing digits are not faults — they are areas of experience you are invited to develop consciously. Your name chart can fill gaps in your birth chart, which is why Bavanga also shows a combined chart.
Arrows of strength (full lines)
When all three cells of a row, column or diagonal contain at least one digit, an arrow of strength is formed:
- 1-2-3 — Planning: organised, methodical, likes to think ahead.
- 4-5-6 — Willpower: determined, persistent, finishes what is started.
- 7-8-9 — Activity: energetic, needs to be busy, learns by doing.
- 1-4-7 — Practicality: skilled with hands, grounded, materially capable.
- 2-5-8 — Emotional balance: calm, empathetic, emotionally mature.
- 3-6-9 — Intellect: sharp mind, good memory, analytical.
- 1-5-9 — Determination: patient, goal-driven, persistent to the end.
- 3-5-7 — Spirituality (compassion): deep inner faith, calm acceptance, insight.
Arrows of weakness (empty lines)
When all three cells of a line are empty, the chart shows an area that needs conscious effort:
- 4-5-6 empty — Frustration: plans meet obstacles; learning patience transforms it.
- 7-8-9 empty — Passivity: hesitating to act; small daily habits help.
- 1-4-7 empty — Disorder: practical life can feel chaotic; routines bring ease.
- 2-5-8 empty — Hypersensitivity: feelings are easily hurt; self-expression heals.
- 3-6-9 empty — Poor memory: details slip away; notes and repetition help.
- 1-5-9 empty — Procrastination: difficulty committing; clear deadlines help.
- 3-5-7 empty — Scepticism: doubt and searching for proof; trust can be built gradually.
The 1-2-3 line cannot be completely empty for anyone born between 1000 and 2999, because the year always contains a 1 or a 2.
Isolated numbers
A digit in a corner (1, 3, 7 or 9) with no neighbouring digits around it, including diagonals, is called isolated. Its energy may feel disconnected from the rest of the personality — strong but hard to express smoothly.
Reading the chart as a whole
Never judge a chart by one arrow. A person with an empty 4-5-6 but a strong life path 8 will experience frustration very differently from someone with a life path 2. Combine the chart with the core numbers, and treat empty arrows as invitations rather than verdicts. Many of the most accomplished people have charts full of gaps — they simply learned to build what was missing.
